What to bring on your Conservation Placement?



Luggage
  • Rucksack - this is ideal if you will be travelling elsewhere before or after your project Holdall/suitcase is otherwise fine
  • Small rucksack/daypack
Clothes
  • Neutral coloured clothes that you do not mind getting ruined. Climate tips; MAY-SEPT is winter so bring warm layers, a hat and gloves as mornings and evenings can be very cold. SEPT-ONWARDS is summer, bring shorts and t-shirts for daytime Advisable; Long sleeve shirt/t-shirt and trousers for mornings and evenings even in summer due to insects, convertible zip-off trousers are ideal.
  • Waterproofs
  • Sturdy closed toe shoes/trainers/boots
  • Flip flops/sandals for around camp
  • Work gloves
  • Sun hat/cap
  • Swim wear
  • Sunglasses - 100% UV protection
General
  • Sleeping bag and Sleeping bag liner
  • Mosquito net is recommended especially during summer months
  • Towel
  • Water Bottle
  • Head Torch/Wind-up Torch (Extra Batteries!)
  • Toiletries - it is advisable to bring extra as they may not be readily/easily available.
  • Suncream - you will be working in the sun on a daily basis so please bring adequate sun protection, SPF 15 or more.
  • Insect Repellent
  • Medical Kit
    - First Aid Dressings: plasters, gauze squares, bandages, adhesive
    - Scissors, safety pins, thermometer, tweezers
    - Painkillers: Paracetamol, Aspirin
    - Oral re-hydration sachets (eg dioralyte)
    - Anti-histamine tablets (non-drowsy) /cream
    - Antiseptic cream
    - Anti-diarrhoeal tablets
    - Laxitives
    - Cold and flu remedies
    - Eye and wound wash
    - Sterile injection kit
    - Any prescription/personal medication - enough for the duration of
      your stay
Personal
  • Binoculars
  • Camera - Lots of batteries or a camera with a quick charge lithium battery is ideal
  • Stationary: Pens, pencils, notebook, journal etc
  • Games/books/Ipod/MP3
  • Any educational resources are welcome (eg Guide books, bird books, mammal books)
  • 3 pronged African plug adaptor
Non - Essential
  • Penknife, sewing kit, money belt
  • Any snacks/drinks etc as there are no shops in the area.
  • Spare passport photo's for visa extensions, government ministries etc


NB: Please bring a photocopy of your passport and tickets/itinerary for us to keep on file while you are here in case of loss or in emergencies.
